Research, design and engineering labs that the world's leading R&D-investing firms (EU R&D Scoreboard) run in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) — including firms headquartered in developing countries themselves (Huawei, BYD, Alibaba, TCS, Embraer, Reliance Jio …). Candidate firms were screened two ways — by their developing-country patent activity and by their global R&D budget (the latter catches big R&D spenders that patent little, e.g. Maruti Suzuki, Ubisoft, NetEase). Solid dots are named labs verified from public sources (hover for what they do, click for sources). Hollow dots are the handful of remaining patent-flagged firms not yet individually verified.
Counts of verified named labs (each dot on the map). China and India dominate by volume, but labs reach 20+ developing economies and every major R&D-intensive sector.
